The Advisory Unit: Computers in Education

AEGIS 3 is well established as the key GIS product for schools as it enables a progression in geographical thinking and enquiry alongside GIS skills for secondary schools. AEGIS 3 comes with curriculum materials that can be used right away in the classroom to display maps using different techniques, search for spatial data and show pictures and captions at locations.

Online Ordnance Survey maps are embedded in AEGIS for Local Authority schools. Initially developed as part of a government initiative to support the Geography curriculum, AEGIS 3 has been enhanced over the years to provide a comprehensive GIS for schools covering requirements from KS3 to A2 level in parallel with the ICT curriculum.

Teachers’ resources include free OS maps of your own locality and fieldwork areas, an exercise on the Studland area, worksheets on changing geography of Italy, with comparable data and maps for UK and France, plus world development maps and data. There is guidance on using your own maps and data for fieldwork with microclimate, traffic survey and urban land use surveys.
